Microcontroller ICs for SWaP Constrained Motor Control Applications Introduced by Infineon

NEUBIBERG, Germany – Infineon Technologies AG in Neubiberg, Germany introduces the MOTIX IMD700A and IMD701A programmable motor controllers for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), automated guided vehicles, e-bikes and cordless power tools.

Motor drivers come in a 9 x 9 millimeter, 4-lead VQFN package and provide the integration and high power density needed for electronic applications constrained by size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP) .

In a single package, the MOTIX IMD70xA controllers combine the functionality of the MOTIX 6EDL7141 three-phase gate driver IC with an additional XMC1404 microcontroller, whose peripherals and specifications are optimized for motor control and drives.

Infineon’s XMC1404 microcontroller includes a 96 MHz math coprocessor to enhance calculations commonly used in sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) algorithms enabling higher system performance. The XMC1404 a;sp inherits most of the high-end peripherals from the XMC4000 family, including PWM timers, position interface (POSIF) and serial communication modules (including CAN).

The motor driver IC provides control of the gate drive slew rate to protect systems against electromagnetic interference (EMI). The IMD70xA controllers support an adjustable gate drive supply voltage even at low battery voltage levels thanks to the built-in high and low side charge pumps, as well as many other adjustable gate drive parameters.

EMI management through the digital gate drive configuration helps designers optimize the EMI test setup without having to change components on the board. Additionally, both products come with drive-specific system protection features such as OCP, UVLO, overheating, and locked rotor detection.
