Porsche says Red Bull F1 deal now canceled

“Dr Ing hc F Porsche AG and Red Bull GmbH have held talks over the past few months about the possibility of Porsche entering Formula 1,” the automaker said.

“The two companies have now reached the joint conclusion that these talks will no longer continue.

“The premise has always been that a partnership would be based on equal footing, which would include not only a driving partnership but also the team. This could not be achieved.

“With the rule changes finalized, the racing series nevertheless remains an attractive environment for Porsche, which will continue to be monitored.”

Although the main sticking point is that Stuttgart does not currently have the infrastructure to produce its own power unit, one potential partner is Williams.

The Grove team is run by Jost Capito, former VW WRC team principal, who also employed several members of the former rally team.

Michael Andretti, who is desperate to have his own F1 entry, could also provide a link, although how much control he would be willing to give up remains to be seen.

After recent rumors began to surface, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said a significant number of manufacturers were ready to step in if Porsche withdrew its interest.
